Teach Me about “L” Shaped Terraces (Bar in Spain)

Teach Me Terraces Please?

Terrace at Graham's PizzeriaMost bars and restaurants have either no terrace at all or they have a rectangular terrace, the width of their frontage.

If you buy a place with no terrace, it will only be useful in the evenings as a restaurant, because in the day time people who come to live in Spain or visit Spain, simply want to enjoy sitting outside whilst they enjoy their food and drink. A place with a small terrace running along the front of the business, can be operated from morning to night, but it will probably only have room for about 4 outside tables and you can’t make a good living from just 4 tables.

The answer is to buy a corner premises with an “L” shaped terrace as this gives you the maximum amount of space for tables. This type of terrace will typically accommodate 8-12 tables and you can really coin in the money, as long as you have good service and good food on offer.

The terrace should be part walled, preferably with cavity walls, which provide space to grow flowers and small shrubs in. This will make your terrace much more attractive. We have laid our terrace with semi-glazed tiles, which are easy to keep clean and always look good. Avoid the simply terracotta terraces, as they grow mould in winter and look terrible come the springtime.

Terrace at Graham's PizzeriaThe terrace should also be fully enclosable and have a terrace heater, so that you can extend your outdoor season by several months. We actually only have inside diners for about 3 months a year.

Finally the “L” shaped terrace gives people various comfort options:

  • They can choose between sunshine and shade.
  • They can choose the other side of the terrace to get away from a situation that they feel uncomfortable with (noisy golfing group or a family with loads of kids etc.).

Don’t forget that the bigger the terrace, the bigger the awning it will permit, thus creating more advertising space and given your business a strong street presence and all this means more customers.
