In order to run a bar well you need to understand what people want and don’t want and this can take quite a time to learn.
If you don’t get your people skills sorted out early on, you’ll lose customers. Here are a few tips to help you
- You can always stop work for a few minutes and pass on a bit of news to a customer or tell the odd joke, but
- Don’t dominate the conversation when talking with a customer. Remember most customers come to a bar to eat and drink, but some are lonely or have a problem and want to tell you their troubles, so you must become a good listener.
- Don’t allow yourself to get stuck at any one particular table talking to just one person or group. You must share your attention with all your customers.
- Don’t make a regular habit of sitting and drinking at a customer’s table. You can have one quick drink with them, but as soon as you’ve finished, tell them that you have work which must be done, make your apologies and move on.
Some more helpful tips will be posted later today
